Equity Makes Time for............

Wouldn’t human beings have more time to be kind, to love, if it wasn’t laid out that some people had everything and other people had very little? I can’t help thinking that we’d have more time for our children, our friends, our lovers, ourselves. If there was no material brass ring to grab for, then what would people do? People in the United States, that is. I've never lived anyplace else. I’m not saying that waiting for equity is the thing to do, and that meanwhile we might as well keep on keeping on with the greed, the cruelty, the selfishness, the disrespect, etc. until the equity arrives. It won’t arrive if we don’t do some focused, consistent work to be kind, be patient, be loving with ourselves and others. This is hard work because we don't have time, we're busy, we're stressed, we're overwhelmed, we're distracted. Working toward equity is the hardest work many of us have ever done and will ever do.

A Long Night

How many months ago was my last post? I mentioned that it was 40-something degrees outside at the time and then I went to bed. I've been asleep for months in blog-time. I've been working 4 jobs for the entire school year, working 7 day weeks on end during this spring semester and giving much of my attention to other people's children or planning and prepping for classes in which I do just that for hours. These days my mind goes blank unpredictably and all I want to do is sit in the park and stare at the trees, grass, water, birds, butterflies and any other distractions that arise. I am teacher, hear me crumble.
